Sugarbeads Newsletter   February, 2010

Dear Gentle Sugarbeader,

Happy New Year, everyone!  Below your find a complete updated class schedule for late January and February with photos of the specialty class projects, as well as our "education corner" where we discuss topaz this month.

Sugarbeads will be closed from February 3rd through February 10th as we are out on or our big spring buying trip.  We will return with zillions of new beads and high-grade gems.  This means week by week you'll be seeing new items, so stop in frequently during the spring and summer as we work to get it all out on the floor. We'll be letting you know what's new each month through this newsletter, so stay tuned!

Topaz: who knew...

Birthstone for December, blue topaz is currently the biggest selling "nontraditional" colored stone in the U.S., largely due to its low cost compared to other blue stones (aquamarine, sapphire.)  Most of the topaz found on the open market today is mined in Brazil, Sri Lanka, Nigeria, and China.  Naturally-occurring blue topaz is quite rare and is almost always very pale or colorless, but the hardness of topaz makes it highly reactive to color-enhancing heat treatment. Much of the blue topaz used in beads begins as very pale blue Brazilian topaz which is irradiated and then heat-treated to obtain a darker blue color.  "Trade name" shades for blue topaz include a watery Sky Blue, a deeper Swiss Blue, and the steely, inky blue tones of  London Blue.  London Blue topaz undergoes the most extensive treatment and is therefore relatively more expensive than other blue topaz shades.  Generally, treated blue topaz is very stable in color unless it is exposed to prolonged sunlight. Topaz is a very hard stone (just below diamond on the Mohs hardness scale) but as such, it is also vulnerable to cleavage if struck at just the right angle. Take care to protect your topaz from hard impact.

We take pride in offering gem-grade blue topaz in sky blue, Swiss blue, electric blue, and London blue shades, as well as pink topaz.  Come in and let us show you!
